Moore River in Guilderton with the ocean in the background

Where to Stay on Indian Ocean Drive

There are so many things to see and do on the Indian Ocean Drive. There are plenty of options to keep you busy. Over the years we have managed to visit and explore most of them. If you would like to read more about the Indian Ocean Drive you can read my complete guide here.

Indian Ocean drive is packed with beachside towns. They all have many similarities (good for fishing and spending time at the beach) but they all have their own individual strengths and sights. So where you will want to stay depends on what you want to see.

With so many great options on the one strip of highway, it can be difficult to choose which one is best for you. So, here, I have tried to break it down into different categories based on what you might want to do to help you decide where is best to base yourself for your own Indian Ocean Drive trip.

Stay in Yanchep

If you don’t want to spend a lot of time in the car.

Yanchep is only 40 minutes away from Perth and even less if you are travelling from the Northern suburbs. Even though it is close it still has heaps to offer. You could choose to stay at the Yanchep Inn which is located within the National Park or you could camp at Henry White Oval. Alternatively, you can choose to stay at one of the many Air bnb’s in the area.

For more detailed information on Yanchep National Park you can check out my post here.

Stay in Guilderton

If you are travelling with young children.

A view over Moore River in Guilderton

The calm river and grassy banks are an ideal spot to chill with young kids. There is no shortage of fun things to do nearby and it is an easy hour drive from Perth.

Most people stay at Guilderton Caravan Park where you can choose from powered and unpowered sites or cabins. It is right on the river and has terrific facilities, but be prepared to book in advance, particularly during summer school holidays.

There are a few air bnb’s in the area or you could try the Moore River Cottage a 3 star hotel set further north than the main riverfront area.

Stay in Ledge Point

If you want a quiet beach side destination.

Ledge Point is one of the smaller towns so it is great for the quiet beachside chilled out vibe. Even though it is quiet, it is still close to heaps of attractions if you want to get out and about.

The local caravan park has powered and unpowered sites as well as cabin options. Or airbnb options such as this one also fit the bill.

Stay in Leeman or Greenhead

If you want to go fishing and boating.

Leeman is where I spent countless school holidays while my uncles headed out on their boats for a bit of deep sea fishing. While there are many great fishing spots along the Indian Ocean Drive, this one remains my favourite because of our family’s long association with the area. We had an onsite caravan at Leeman Caravan Park which is the only caravan park in town. Or if you prefer a whole house to yourself head to Airbnb for heaps of options.

Greenhead is the larger of the two towns and has a few extra amenities in town, but Leeman will forever be my favourite!

Stay in Lancelin

If you want to go four wheel driving or sandboarding.

Lancelin is home to some amazing sand dunes which are perfect for four wheel driving and for sand boarding. You can do a tour in the area or head out there on your own in you have a four wheel drive.

On our last visit out there we stayed in this Airbnb which we found excellent value for 3 families. There are plenty of other great options as well including these ones.

Stay in Cervantes

If you want to see something incredible.

The Pinnacles at Nambung National Park on Indian Ocean Drive

Home to the Stromatolites and the Pinnacles, it is hard to go past Cervantes. It also has an incredible beach, great seafood and a central location.

The caravan park is now owned by RAC so if you’re a member head to their website to get a discount. If you prefer a hotel or villa there are plenty available and good old Airbnb is another great option as well.

Stay in Jurien bay

If you want a good all rounder.

Jurien has the best of everything. It is about half way from everywhere and it is a great base to explore the whole of the Indian Ocean Drive. The town is one of the largest on the highway, so you can also enjoy the benefits of all the amenities it has to offer. There is heaps of accommodation to choose from, including a caravan park which also offers chalets. There are heaps of Airbnbs as people rent their holiday homes.

Stay in Cliff Head

If you want to free camp.

Just the rocks remain

Cliff Head is a completely free campsite offered by the Shire of Irwin. It is right on the beach with heaps of space, drop toilets and fire pits. You can read more about our trip to Cliff Head to give you an idea of what it is like.

Stay at Sandy Cape Recreation Area

If you don’t want to pay a lot but still want to be in the thick of it.

Walking down the beach at Sandy Cape Recreation Area

Sandy Cape is a low-cost campground that is only $20 per night per site.

Located on the other side of the dunes from the beach, the sheltered bay is less than a five minute walk from your camp site. To your other side are endless white sand dunes. All only 10 minutes away from Jurien Bay means that you are at the heart of the Indian Ocean Drive and all it has to offer.

Camp fees are paid to the camp host. No bookings are available. It is a first come first serve basis. We loved our stay there which you can read about here.

This should help you to narrow down your options when you are considering a trip down Indian Ocean Drive. Don’t forget to check out my Ultimate Guide to the Indian Ocean Drive for even more handy information about the area.
